A MAN, HIS DOG AND A CANOE
BY LIZ HAWLEY - Leicester Mercury

One man and his dog took on a challenge of a lifetime when they paddled more than 160 miles for fun. Canoeist Adam Brewster set off from his home with his pet dog, Meg, on a rainy April morning and arrived in Greenwich seven days later. The pair, from East Goscote, took on the challenge after Adam decided to set himself tough targets to achieve each year.
On the way to completing the 161-mile trek,Adam and his labrador negotiated 139 locks and four major tunnels.
In the past, he has canoed the length of the River Shannon, in Ireland, from his house to the River Humber and has sea kayaked in Mexico.
The 54-year-old said: "I started setting myself targets six years ago so that each year I have a major challenge.
"Some people, probably think I am off my head doing these things.
"Meg is my best friend - she doesn't stray far from my side.
"Determination keeps me going when I am out there on my own and you meet a lot of interesting people along the way."
Adam, who has been canoeing for 10 years, braved the driving wind and rain to reach his final destination on time and spent the nights either sleeping in his tent, which he carried on board the canoe, or in the canoe itself.
The canoeing instructor, who works at Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre, in Loughborough Road, also carried all his food and drinks on board his vessel.
Once they reached Greenwich, the pair stopped by the Cutty Sark ship to get a quick photo to remind them of their adventure.
Angela Hampton, assistant manager at Leicester Outdoor Pursuit Centre, said: "Considering the number of people who canoe, there is only a small minority who have the ability and knowledge to be able to do this sort of thing.
"Adam likes the challenge and he has done a lot of long-distance events."
Next year, he plans to go on a trekking holiday to Mongolia.
